Thucydides was an Athenian general and historian who famously served in the Peloponnesian War, was exiled, then wrote a history of the war known to posterity as The History of the Peloponnesian War. He is sometimes considered one of the founding fathers of history alongside Herodotus. His work, however, is intensely philosophical (as I’ve written professionally). In this short series of online lectures, I explore the philosophy, politics, and geopolitics behind the famous episodes of the Peloponnesian War as written by Thucydides: The outbreak of war between Sparta and Athens, The Corcyraean Civil War (on the use and abuse of language in revolution), the Melian Dialogue, and the famous Funeral Oration Pericles.
LECTURE ONE: GEOPOLITICS AND THE WAR BETWEEN ATHENS AND SPARTA
LECTURE TWO: THE CORCYRAEAN CIVIL WAR (REVOLUTION AND LANGUAGE)
LECTURE THREE: GEOPOLITICS AND THE MELIAN DIALOGUE
LECTURE FOUR: THE FUNERAL ORATION OF PERICLES
