Plato is the most important philosopher to have ever lived. In fact, it is sometimes said that Western philosophy is but a “series of footnotes to Plato.” The Platonic dialogues are famous and read by virtually every philosophy student going through a philosophy education. As a Plato scholar who is academically published and cited on Plato, Plato is my favorite and most exciting Greek philosopher to read and write on. In this series of online lectures, I explore the Platonic dialogues and explain them as they are: works of political philosophy. In this lecture series I provide an introduction to reading Plato, and summary and explanations of The Timaeus, The Symposium, The Euthyphro, The Phaedrus, and The Phaedo, five of Plato’s most famous individual dialogues not named The Republic and The Laws which will get their own lecture series.
LECTURE ONE: INTRODUCTION TO READING PLATO
LECTURE TWO: PLATO’S TIMAEUS
LECTURE THREE: THE SYMPOSIUM
LECTURE FOUR: THE EUTHYPHRO
LECTURE FIVE: THE PHAEDRUS
LECTURE SIX: THE PHAEDO
